Our Growing Govanhill group started during the pandemic in the form of Zoom growing classes, with participants using seeds, pots and soil delivered to their door. It then moved outside into Toryglen allotments (managed by the wonderful Urban Roots gardeners). Participants learned how to grow veggies, flowers, fruits and herbs, became Urban Roots volunteers, and with time started to organise their own activities and found another site by themselves to plant up and tend.
It was all summed up wonderfully by a participant: “It is such a lovely place and very therapeutic … We have learned an awful lot about how to grow plants indoors and out, been inspired to try new things, eaten our own vegetables, and become a really supportive group of friends.”
The project was a great success and we hope to be able to offer similar opportunities to people in our community again in the future.
