Art and Health Commissions
Creativity, art and culture are at the heart of Govanhill Baths Community Trust. Since the beginning of the Save Our Pool campaign art has been an integral part of the activism, wellbeing and health activities run by the community, for the community in Govanhill.
In 2020 the Wellbeing programme expanded into the now Wellbeing, Arts and Health programme. In addition to our classes and events, we commission artists to create work that enhances and promotes the community’s health and wellbeing, raises awareness of inequalities within our community and increases community access to high quality art. We want to challenge the traditional power balances between artists, community and organisations by working in a democratic and collective manner that distributes and challenges conventional practices of ownership and authorship of art.
“Art helps us access and express parts of ourselves that are often unavailable to other forms of human interaction. It flies below the radar, delivering nourishment for our soul and returning with stories from the unconscious. A world without art is an inhuman world. Making and consuming art lifts our spirits and keeps us sane. Art, like science and religion, helps us make meaning from our lives, and to make meaning is to make us feel better.” Grayson Perry, Artist
