Category Is Books and Govanhill Baths Community Trust are delighted to present The Govanhill Queer Community Banner, a celebration of our diverse community.

Working with poet Dean Atta and artist gainAgain (Drew Taylor Wilson), the banner weaves together words and imagery by the queer community about collective experiences, histories, relationships and life in Govanhill, creating a beautiful snapshot of the Glasgow Southside’s queer community.

Wednesday – Friday (12-4pm) and Saturday (12-2pm) at The Deep End courtyard*, 21 Nithsdale Street, G41 2PZ

*Maximum 6 people in the courtyard, from up-to 2 households/bubbles.

Please adhere to the 2 meter social distancing, the courtyard is an outdoor space but we encourage those who can to please wear a face covering.

Join us for a series of workshops on growing food, foraging, tactical urbanism, house plant care and Queer ecology. Over 12 weeks we’ll explore a series of online talks and workshops and outdoor activities led by the interest of the group.

The group will be facilitated by Martha Adonai Williams, who is a black queer facilitator, community organiser and food grower based in the Southside.

Here is the first 4 weeks of the programme:

Monday 2nd November, 1pm-2pm:  Lunchtime foraging walk (outdoors)

Discover the edible and medicinal plants growing around us in the city. Join Catriona Gibson, Foraging Tutor and Medical Herbalist as we explore some of the diverse range of plants in Queen’s Park. Autumn berries, many with immune boosting effects, can still be found throughout the park. We’ll also look at some of the plants that are getting ready for Winter and talk about how to use them when they reappear in the Spring. The focus will be on safe, sustainable foraging, respecting the plants and others who use them.

The walk will be on and off paths, so please prepare for some areas being muddy. There will be lots of opportunities to stop along the way to look at plants, so do wrap up warm and bring a stool if you’d prefer not to stand for too long. No prior experience required, you may want to bring a notebook or take photos as we go around the park.
