Community Outreach


Rags to Riches provides affordable community outreach services for organisations in and around Glasgow. We work with groups to deliver bespoke educational and training services that are not only beneficial to building participants’ confidence and skill development, but also raise awareness of the importance of the circular economy, creativity and upcycling in the fight to save the planet.

We offer an extensive variety of community outreach programmes for organisations including:

  • Sewing, knitting, weaving and macrame workshops
  • Furniture making/upcycling workshops
  • Professional and start-up training
  • Consultations and presentations about upcycling in the community
  • Events and campaigning
  • Public art installations
  • Bespoke playgrounds
  • Tailor-made outdoor furniture
  • Corporate team building and development

Free Climate Action Hub 2024-25 Activities

These sessions are run by Rags to Riches,  the reuse and upcycling arm of Govanhill Baths Community Trust,  supported by the Glasgow Climate Action Hub Fund. The aim of these sessions is to learn new skills in a friendly and supportive environment, and to help communities engage in practical climate action.


Current Programme

  • Social sewing, reuse & upcycling @ The Deep End
    Are you looking for a space to socialise while learning new skills or practicing what you know? Then this class is for you!  Join us for a 6 week class where you can meet people, and build your sewing skills, while also upcycling fabrics and zero waste material.  Our instructor Gail will be there to guide and support you. Suitable for Beginners.

    • Block 1: 1-3pm, Tuesday 4th June (x6 weeks)
    • Block 2: 1-3pm, Tuesday 23rd July (x6 weeks)
    • Block 1: 1-3pm, Tuesday 3rd Sept (x6 weeks)

  • Textiles mending @ Govanhill Library (dates TBC)
    Want to learn to mend your clothes in a friendly environment? Mending can be a very mindful practice, while also allowing you to wear clothes you own for longer, and reducing your impact on the environment. Join us in these relaxed and friendly drop-in sessions. Please register your interest and we’ll confirm your space.
  • Mould your own products with recycled plastic (Wednesday – dates TBC)
    Try your hand at moulding with recycled plastic in our studio?
  • Learn to build your own planter (Beginners Woodwork) (Tuesday – dates TBC)

Who are these sessions for?

These creative activities are FREE and open to;

  • Adults (16+) living within a mile of Govanhill
  • Who are not currently employed (or are on low income)
  • Not in full-time education
  • Refugees and asylum-seekers are welcome to attend from anywhere in the city

Over the years we have organised and hosted a brilliant collection of fun, creative and exciting events with upcycling and community engagement at their core.

From upcycled fashion shows with emerging and established designers to entire orchestras made from rubbish, we look to waste to deliver key events and art installations that raise awareness of the importance of creativity in the fight for our environment, social inclusion and empowerment.
