The Ensemble Upvention is a new community music project, transforming discarded objects into sounds and music. It’s part upcycling and part performance. Govanhill Baths had the fantastic Trash Orchestra before and we are now continuing that spirit.
We are starting with evening sessions on Wednesdays 2 and 9 March 2022 at The Deep End, 21 Nithsdale Street, Glasgow G41 2PZ. The sessions will continue on Wednesday evenings until at least August.
This project also has an international element. We’ve found an organisation called S27 in Berlin (https://www.s27.de/) who have loads in common with Govanhill Baths. They’re described as ‘a city laboratory for creative research’ and their work includes providing living and recreation space for young people, work integration of refugees and the future of urban culture. And they’ve been making musical instruments from waste. This project will be part of the exchange we are building with S27. We’ll be linking musical ideas, swapping some of the things we are making and sending field recordings that will become part of the music.
Whether you have existing musical skills or not, your energy and commitment to working in this new team will be very welcome.
We are starting with introductory evening sessions on Wednesdays 2 and 9 March 2022 at The Deep End, 21 Nithsdale Street, Glasgow G41 2PZ. You can come to both but don’t worry if you can’t make it to one of them.
The sessions will continue on Wednesday evenings until at least August when we’re aiming for a gig at the Govanhill Carnival, with some outings before then. We need people who will enjoy this as it develops over time.
