Carnival & Parade

Carnival Parade
Date: Saturday 06 August, 1.00pm
Meet: Assemble at 12.30pm, Govanhill Park

The famous Govanhill Carnival Parade is back for the fifth time – more colourful and vibrant than ever! This anti-racist celebration of pride, unity and the contributions immigrants have made to our community will once again weave its way from Govanhill Park. Drummers, pipers, brass bands, jugglers, roller skaters, dancers and all the brilliant community groups are back. We’ll be making noise and making ourselves heard as we make our way to the Queens Park where the Carnival will begin! We can’t wait to see you with your glad rags on. It’s time for some dancing in the street! Individuals or groups wanting to join the parade, contact: carnival@govanhillbaths.com

Occupy! Occupy! Occupy! Banner Launch
On our 21st anniversary year, we are delighted to launch our beautiful banner by local artist Amelia Rowe celebrating the occupation of Govanhill Baths by the Save Our Pool campaign, 21st March – 7th August 2001. The longest occupation of a public building in British history! Keep your eyes peeled to spot it on the Carnival Parade.

Anti-Racist Screen and Block Printing Workshop with Kengkeng

Head on over and join local artist and activist Kengkeng at her pop-up stall at the Govanhill Carnival. Using a series of different block cut outs and designs you will be able to print slogans on t-shirts and signs to take away with you! Bring down any materials and fabrics you’d like to turn into an anti-racist statement for the world to see. This workshop is not to be missed!
Carnival Quiet Space and Anti- Racist Zine Making Workshop
Date: Saturday 06 August, 10:00-5:00
Location: Queens Park Parish Church, 170 Queen’s Dr, Glasgow G42 8QZ

We will be running a Quiet Space on the day of the Carnival. This will offer a peaceful alternative to the parade itself for those who still want to take part in the festivities. Gather for some gentle colouring or zine-making, which will take inspiration from anti-racist action. Or simply have a rest from the parade  in a calm environment, equipped with lower lighting and comfy seats. Anyone is welcome to visit the Quiet Space, and a facilitator will be present at all times.
