Both authors are experts on MacLean’s life and activism and have their own take on this great Scottish hero. Henry Bell’s book ‘Hero of Red Clydeside’ examines MacLean’s work as an organiser and educator, his imprisonment and hunger strike, and how he became the early hero of radical Scottish Independence. Gerard Cairns will discuss his book ‘The Red and the Green – a Portrait of John Maclean’ which shines new light on MacLean’s links with Irish revolutionaries on Clydeside, and the practical assistance he gave to the cause of Irish freedom. ‘Invisible Schemes’ is a novel about the ways in which working-class communities are made invisible.
No-one is buying McCann’s drugs, and he wants to know why. So he sends his nephew Mark out to report on the schemes that make up his empire. Mark’s strange tales begin to reveal the schemes’ true, hidden nature…
We will have dramatised readings from the book, and Professor Willy Maley will speak on the issues raised by the novel. We’ll also hear the latest from local campaigns on social housing.
