Duck Soup and His Girl Friday (U)

Sat 12 Mar 2016| 1:30 pm- 5:00 pm

- £6 – £8

Southside Film is thrilled to bring you two whip-smart comedies from Hollywood’s Golden Era. We’ll be screening a double feature of the Marx Brothers’ zenith, DUCK SOUP, and Howard Hawks’ HIS GIRL FRIDAY. Iconic for their infectious pace and rapid-fire dialogue, make sure this is one matinee you don’t miss.

DUCK SOUP (1933)

Widely considered to be the Marx brothers’ best film, Duck Soup sees Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) appointed the new leader of the tiny bankrupt nation of Freedonia. Committed to mayhem and chaos at every turn, Firefly’s leadership incites Freedonia into war with rival country Sylvania. With its frenetic slapstick, sharp zingers, and complete buffoonery, Duck Soup remains the quintessential anarchic comedy.

HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940)

In Howard Hawks’ razor sharp screwball comedy set amongst the fast-paced machinations of the newspaper world, Rosalind Russell stars as Hildy Johnson, the quick-talking ex-reporter determined to leave the business and her scheming editor/former husband Walter Burns (Cary Grant) behind her. When faced with the prospect of being able to save a condemned man from execution, Hildy makes a reluctant return to the pressroom, all the while trying to pacify her new fiancé (Ralph Ballamy). As ever with Hawks it’s spikey, acerbic, and packed full of hilarious verbal sparring between Russell and Grant.
