Self-Massage

This simple self-care technique is based on Shiatsu, or ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that works with our body’s energy flow, supporting and strengthening our natural ability to heal and balance ourselves. It works on the whole person, releasing tension in the muscles, helping to lift our mood and making us feel relaxed.

Pressing this point in your hand is very beneficial for relieving stress and anxiety. Just follow the instructions below!

  • Sit comfortably
  • Place your right thumb gently on the point of your left hand, as shown in the picture above
  • Press gently and breathe slowly for up to one minute
  • Focus on relieving tension around your chest and heart area as you press
  • Repeat on the other hand

In the video below Elaine Liechti, from the Glasgow School of Shiatsu, explains how to do the massage.

You can do this anytime of the day; whilst watching TV, when you are out and about, or discreetly whilst talking to friends – anytime you feel anxious or stressed.
