Deep End

The Deep End – Govanhill Baths Arts Space

The Deep End is a new arts space and social enterprise developed by Govanhill Baths Community Trust (GBCT). The space will accommodate Govanhill Baths Arts (GBArt) Space, Rags to Riches Studios, Govanhill Baths Ceramics, Workshop Spaces and Meeting Rooms.

Creativity has always been at the heart of our campaign to save Govanhill Baths and will be the focus of this new, vibrant, making and learning space. Our aim is to provide our programmes, artists, makers, creators and community groups from the local area with inspiring spaces and places to work. The Deep End space has been designed with the aim of meeting the needs of contemporary arts practitioners and makers, providing an accessible and welcoming venue promoting interaction between the creative industries and audiences.

Nestled down a lane in Strathbungo, with its own driveway, The Deep End is a safe and secure space of 900 square meters with a sheltered urban courtyard of 130 square meters. It is a short walk from Govanhill Baths and with excellent public transport links.

Refurbished entrance

The Govanhill Baths Community Trust is recruiting a Treasurer to join a dynamic board to take forward the reopening of the Baths as a Wellbeing Centre in 2021. We’re looking for an experience finance professional who will be the lead for the board in all financial matters.

These are exciting times for the Govanhill Baths Community Trust. After 18 years of determined campaigning the GBCT has been awarded substantial grant money to begin work on bringing the building back into operation. We expect to have raised the full £6.4 million needed to start the restoration and refurbishment of the building by March 2019. We have been successful in securing community investment of over £280,000 by issuing community shares in the project and will be transferring our operations to a community benefit society when the building opens.

The refurbishment is scheduled to begin in 2019 and will bring into service the Ladies’ pool, Learners’ pool, Turkish Suite and Sauna, Gym, a Community Kitchen/Cafe and Multipurpose community spaces. While the former public washhouse, or ‘steamie’, will be turned into a theatre venue and community events and arts space.

Working alongside the Govanhill Baths Preservation Trust which is managing the capital redevelopment of the building, the Govanhill Bath Community Trust will be maintaining a diverse programme of arts and wellbeing activities in the community, developing an outreach programme to keep people informed about the redevelopment and doing the ground work to put systems and procedures in place for when the building reopens.

We expect that Board members are committed to helping the Trust re-open the Baths as a Wellbeing Centre and contribute to the social, cultural and built regeneration of Govanhill as a community on the Southside of Glasgow.

As Treasurer you will be responsible for maintaining an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs, safeguarding its financial viability and ensuring that proper financial procedures and records are maintained. Therefore we are specifically looking for someone with charity accounts and finance experience to take on the role of Treasurer, it would be helpful if applicants had an accountancy qualification but this isn’t required. This is a voluntary position.

Look at our website to find out more about the wide ranging work of the GBCT. For all enquiries and for an application pack please contact alex@govanhillbaths.com

The Board currently meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm at the Govanhill Baths office, 126 Calder street (opposite the Baths).

Deadline to apply: 28th April 2019
