'Emporium' Is Up And Running!

The doors of our new and greatly expanded GBCT Charity shop 'Emporium' at, 465 Victoria Road, were formally opened on Saturday the 22nd January at 12pm by the RSAMD 'Govanhill Swimmers'. After a series of “dry swimming” exercises to the huge amusement and delight as usual of shoppers up and down Victoria Road, the ribbon was cut. With a good crowd on the pavement, lots of refreshments, balloons and a piper in attendance to enliven matters the Emporium was well and truly launched.
And what a success since! Takings have tripled as compared to our “old” shop in Calder Street and donations and donations just keep rolling in
The Manager, Inga Zaiceva said, “We are all very excited and hope that our supporters will not only come along to buy goods but also continue to donate. We are always looking for clothes, household goods, small electrical items and small pieces of furniture. Clothes perhaps not perfect for sale can also be donated since we recycle them to raise funds! Why not pop in and grab a bargain?”
Such has been the success, an Assistant Manager, Janice Curless has had to be appointed. Up to 30 volunteers from the local diverse community variously contribute to the new shop which benefited greatly from a refurbishment grant from Big Lottery of £10K and a rental reduction of 50% and four months free rental by the leaseholders Glasgow City Council. The stunning interior design and eye-catching (art décor!) decoration of the exterior were completed by the Trust’s volunteers.
This magnificent new shop, already in receipt of so many congratulations for its style and for “brightening” Vicky Road will soon have additional services such as a tailoring and altering service as well as being home to a sewing network!
Look out for our special bargains on site (currently baby and maternity clothes - and next Sunday get along and have a a portrait sketched by a resident artist - for just a tenner!
