First Artist in Residence for Refugee Day at the Baths 2012

First Artist In Residence For Refugee Day At The Baths 2012

Posted: 13th Dec. 2011 By Andrew Johnson

Tawona Sithole has been funded by the South East Arts Network to work with the Trust as our first ever Artist in Residence. Starting in the New Year he will work towards a public presentation in the baths as a part of our annual Refugee Week and Big Lunch Celebrations in June 2012.

Working with community members he will prepare a “Promenade” performance in the Baths using the medium of a series of short play scenarios incorporating poetry, song and dance. Drawing on the sentiments expressed about the closure of the Baths as an inspiration, this showpiece will articulate the impact of the closure of the Baths, and the excitement about them re-opening in December this year. He will work in close contact with GBART and the Centre for Community Practice and full use will be made of the existing communications networks of Govanhill Baths Trust and associated networks. There will be a poster campaign at various community venues in the area, and through social networking sites as well as the GBCT web site. Tawona is a well-known writer and performer, he lives in Govanhill and has his own a play opening in Glasgow the New Year as well. He will help participants with the writing and enactment of their baths stories through a series of workshops between February and June. These will explore all aspects of the script writing and acting process in addition to the visual representation of this through the technical production of performance and textile design in costumes. He will be engaging with the local community and offering a forum that promotes a sense of belonging in Govanhill and the importance of community responsibility. If you are interested and want to tell your Govanhill Story about the baths closing and now re-opening contact Lisa; info@govanhillbaths.com. T.0141 433 2999
