Our Charity Shop, "The Emporium"
Elaine C Smith opened our first Charity Shop in Calder Street in August 2007. The shop was not only a response to the Trust’s need to raise funds but also to assist local people who we knew would benefit from a regular flow of recycled goods - as would the environment!
You name it we have it - books, clothes, foot-wear, jewelry, watches, toys, CD’s, DVD’s, video tapes, ornaments, kitchen equipment, bed-linen, curtains, all manner of bric-a -brac and electrical goods. Best bargains on the Southside!
We now have some 30 volunteers drawn uniquely from the whole of the diverse Govanhill community. Because of its continued and growing success we have now moved to much grander premises 5 times the size of the original shop. Called "Emporium" at 465 Victoria Road Govanhill, its doors opened on 22nd January this year. Read all about the opening.
The shop provides opportunities for voluntary work and this leads to employability skills for local people. Some 30 volunteers currently contribute and our manager, Inga Zaiceva is the friendly face always ready to help and assist. So rapid has been the expansion we have also had to appoint an assistant manager, Janice Curless who, similalry will be there to greet you.
The shop is now a thriving hub of activity where many people meet and chat as they browse our wide range of goods. We are continually astonished by the amount of goods local people contribute – the flow is endless. However, if you have anything that you think can be resold please do bring it along or contact us (as below) for it to be uplifted.
This magnificent new shop, already in receipt of so many congratulations for its style and for “brightening” Vicky Road, will soon have additional services (Riches and Rags) such as a tailoring and altering service as well as being home to a sewing network!
So, pop in and browse, have a chat with our friendly staff about any donations you may have. We can uplift if necessary. Remember all proceeds go towards the re-opening of Govanhill Baths something everyone wants on Glasgow's southside!
